Federal Energy Efficiency Tax Credits for Consumers

Tax Credits for Home Builders

Home builders are eligible for a $2,000 tax credit for a new energy efficient home that achieves 50% energy savings for heating and cooling over the 2004 International Energy Conservation Code and supplements. At least 1/5 of the energy savings must come from building envelope improvements.


Chicagoland Natural Gas Savings Program

Rebates for residential energy efficiency products available to current Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas customers. Products include:

  • insulation
  • gas furnaces
  • gas boilers
  • clothes washers
  • water heaters

All products must meet the energy efficiency levels specified by the program in order to qualify. Rebates range from $100 to $750 depending on the product purchased, and customers may be eligible to receive rebates on more than one product.

Rebates are available for qualifying purchases made from November 1, 2009 - January 15, 2010. Learn more at conservationrebates.com.

ComEd Appliance Buy-Back Recycling Program

If you have an older, working second refrigerator or freezer, it may be using up to five times more electricity per year than a newer model and costing you as much as an extra $150/yr to operate.

With ComEd's Appliance Buy-Back Recycling Program, ComEd will:

  • Haul your old refrigerator or freezer away for free
  • Pay you $25 for each appliance
  • Dispose of the appliance responsibly
